MEET SAM HERE
As I’m writing this, Sam is snuggled into a little ball in our Moby wrap. Grey’s Anatomy is on repeat and I’m sipping a coffee protein smoothie – two birds, one stone. 🙂 The wrap was the one thing Josh requested to get so he could wear Sam everywhere. Once he figured it out, he strutted around the house, Sam strapped to him. Sam is finally home from the NICU after five and a half weeks.
The first four weeks, we weren’t sure about anything. We weren’t even sure if Sam would make it and that was scary as hell. It wasn’t until late March that we actually had the confidence that he would pull through. He’s a fighter. Josh and I joke it’s in the name. Both of the other Sams in our lives (my grandfather and my uncle) have survived things you wouldn’t believe.
The first couple days at home were a bit rocky. I got some version of food poisoning and was really sick the last 48 hours. Not ideal when bringing home your baby for the first time. Fortunately, I’m recovered now, but that was rough. We’re getting into the swing of things and getting our routine down. We’ve already had our first set of doctor appointments. If you didn’t know Sam was a NICU baby that endured multiple surgeries, you’d just think he was any other baby. Honestly, him being “average” is the best news we can get right now.
You guys, he is so amazing! I can’t believe this tiny human exists. His personality is starting to surface and it’s a mix of mischievous and sweet. It’s not unlike him to fake sleep just to be sure he gets extra cuddles. When he gets caught, a slow smile creeps across his face and it’s hilarious!
His hair is also changing. When he was born, it was a cool-tone brown, much like Josh’s. It’s since turned into a red. His hair looks fairly brunette indoors. But when the sunlight hits it at the right angles, he becomes something short of a carrot top. He got this from me as my hair is the same (here’s a good photo).
Overall, we’re just so happy he’s home. We still have a couple weeks of consistent doctor appointments and check-ups before we start to get into the swing of our new normal, but we’re getting there. As a side note, we probably won’t be posting much about Sam in the future. He might pop up on Instagram here and there, but we believe in letting Sam live his life. Even though he’s our baby, he’s still his own person. And, until he’s old enough to give permission, we want him to feel like he can live his life without being worried about what’s going to be making it online. Thank you all!

Congratulations and I’m so happy that you guys finally have some semblance of “normal” around the house!
